GENERAL INFORMATION
Telecommunications distribution systems encountering bridges are normally enclosed in conduit systems and
supported from the underside of the bridge structures. Many bridges are designed with a sloping embankment to
help shore up the end supports.
These embankments can provide convenient cover for transients and adolescents. Many of these secluded spaces have become popular dwellings for transients who have, on occasion, built fires in close proximity to the
cable and conduit structures, resulting in serious damage to the cables. Present under-bridge conduit structures
provide inadequate protection from this potential fire damage. The resulting outages are costly and can effect
subscriber services in a large geographical area.

The FLAME-GUARD™ system is specially designed to provide long-term protection for these exposed conduit structures from potentially damaging fires. Tests have shown superior heat protection for up to five hours of continuous exposure to open flames at temperatures up to 1,600°F, while maximum internal temperature of the conduit was less than 200°F.
